my coworker today was like “i bet you dont know this song” and put on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. And I was like “yeah, of course I do, it’s Elton John” and he was like “who?” and I said “Elton John. He wrote this” and he was like “oh I don’t know about that, it’s just in the Chicken Little movie”

How am I supposed to explain to my family that this is the only thing that will make me laugh anymore

The only acceptable reason to have kids is that you want to nurture and care for another being.

That’s it. That’s all of the good reasons.

Not because you want someone to take care of you on your old age, not because you want them to take on a certain career. None of that. To have such expectations of a child makes it unethical to have one imo, it lays the foundation for emotional blackmail; as in, ‘I brought you into this world and raised you, had you for this reason so give me that happiness’. No one owes you anything for the things you do out of your own will for your own sake, not even your children

“That’s a nice song,’ said young Sam, and Vimes remembered that he was hearing it for the first time.
It’s an old soldiers’ song,’ he said.
Really, sarge? But it’s about angels.’
Yes,
thought Vimes, and it’s amazing what bits those angels cause to rise up
as the song progresses. It’s a real soldiers’ song: sentimental, with
dirty bits.
As I recall, they used to sing it after battles,’ he said. ‘I’ve seen old men cry when they sing it,’ he added.
Why? It sounds cheerful.’
They were remembering who they were not singing it with, thought Vimes. You’ll learn. I know you will.”

Peter Joseph on structural violence, from this video.

Brilliant

Spot on. Like Coretta Scott King said, I must remind you that starving a child is violence. Neglecting school children is violence. Punishing a mother and her family is violence. Discrimination against a working man is violence. Ghetto housing is violence. Ignoring medical need is violence. Contempt for poverty is violence.
